Hello everyone! Megan_Highwind here with my thoughts on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finale. *SPOILER WARNING FOR SEASON FINALE* This week’s duo of episodes constituted the finale to a compelling season for the show. Things started out with Daisy being locked up in a containment pod for her protection and the safety of those around her. After divulging Hive’s plans for the warhead, Fitz, Talbot, and Coulson are working together to try to find the kill codes to shut down the facility where Hive is activating the warhead. The group manages to shut everything down right before the warhead explodes.
Hive decides to go after S.H.I.E.L.D. and infiltrates the facility. Lincoln, Yo-Yo, and Mack set up a device that will make Hive remember every memory from the people that he has taken over physically. Once the device is activated, Hive clutches his skull and is momentarily overtaken by memories of the past and confused by everything hitting him all at once. While Hive is down for the count, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents work to save the people on the island where the warhead was being held. Hive follows the agents out of the facility where Hive is then trapped in a cube. Unfortunately, Hive’s cronies are still in possession of the warhead and could set it off at anytime once the power is restored.
S.H.I.E.L.D. realizes that Hive has many followers that will come to save him from his cubed prison. In the area where Hive is being held, Fitz and a few other agents are examining some crates when they explode and turn the agents closest to it into Primitives. Trapped in the room, Fitz is able to get Simmons to open a door for him to escape while the Primitives work to free Hive from his prison. While watching from her cell, Daisy reveals to Mack that she told Hive about the ship’s ability to go into high altitude areas and the pair realize that his plan is now to use the ship in order to disperse the smoke that will turn people into Hive’s minions. Once Mack runs off to tell the others, Daisy uses the cell that she is in and goes into the room where Hive is at. She begs Hive to take her back into his control as she is miserable with the things that she has done while under it and no longer wants to feel. Hive tells her that he is no longer able to influence her.
When Hive tells Daisy that she can no longer be a part of him, Daisy bursts into a fit of rage and unsuccessfully attempts to kill Hive. Even though Daisy fails to kill him, Hive allows Daisy to live and goes to the ship and steals it. Coulson takes a Quinjet and lands on the ship where Hive is planning to release the toxin. Coulson then brings to light that the rest of the agents are working to take control of the ship. Coulson then starts to go in and out and shows Hive that he is not actually with him on the ship, but is instead a hologram. The team goes to take control of the ship where Lincoln is hurt by James, who is trying to defend the area. When Daisy sees Lincoln hurt, she mentions that everything that has happened is her fault and that she wants to be the one to stop Hive’s plan once and for all.
While Daisy is preparing inside the Quinjet, Hive is able to creep up behind her without her noticing. Daisy tells Hive that she has manually overrode the coordinates that Hive has set. Thinking that she won, Hive scoffs as he has Ward’s memories and can easily reset the coordinates. That is when Lincoln shows himself in the pilot seat of the ship and announces that he has shorted the controls so they can no longer be changed. He then zaps Daisy off the ship and takes off with Hive onboard. Lincoln then divulges that he believes it was his destiny to take Hive and the toxins off the planet since he is the only one who could short-circuit the controls. Lincoln then tells Daisy that he loves her before losing communication.
The reset warhead comes near the end of the countdown for when it will explode as Hive and Lincoln contemplate their lives and impending death. Enemies though they are, the two are able to find a sort of peace with each other before the end. Six months after the events with the warhead, Daisy has gone out on her own and does not allow the agents to get anywhere near her in order to bring her back to S.H.I.E.L.D. It appears as though Daisy no longer has any desire to return to her friends as the episode ends.
This season has been great and the conclusion was no exception. The pacing of the episodes were well thought out and enjoyable to watch. It makes sense that Daisy would have an interminable sense of regret for her actions under Hive’s control and would want to distance herself from her team in order to prevent anything else from happening to them, especially after Lincoln’s death. My favorite scene of the entire two-hour session was, in fact, the scene between Lincoln and Hive directly before the end. Both parties come to accept that the other was working to create a better world, just in different ways. It was compelling to see how when confronted with something as final as death, two enemies are able to agree that they were both working towards the same goal. Luckily, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been renewed for another season, so we will be able to see exactly how things pan out for Coulson, Daisy, and the others next season!
