Review – Gotham “Unleashed”

Hello everyone! Megan_Highwind here! Gotham is getting close to the end of the season and things are starting to heat up even further. The episode starts with Gordon and Bullock going to Dr. Strange’s office with a warrant to search the area. Unfortunately for them, Strange was alerted to them coming before they got there and shredded every piece of evidence that they could have found. On top of that, the warrant that the pair has only allows them to search Strange’s office, and not the rest of the facility. After deciding that pursuing Strange further is fruitless with a killer on the loose, they turn their sights to find Theo’s sister, whom they believe can help them locate Theo/Azrael and take him down.

Once they find Tabitha, she lets Gordon and Bullock know that Azrael is an ancient assassin who is probably looking for his sword in order to kill Gordon. She reveals that the sword is at the crypt where he grandfather is laid to rest and the three head to the crypt. When they reach the crypt, they are confronted by Azrael who attempts to murder Gordon. Tabitha saves Gordon and gets stabbed after talking to Azrael and reminding him of his mission to get rid of Bruce Wayne. Fortunately for Tabitha, she survives the brutal stabbing and is taken to the hospital. Gordon rushes to try to find Bruce Wayne to save him from Azrael.

While all this is happening, Bruce himself is focused on finding Strange and making sure he gets put in jail. Bruce asks Selina for help breaking into Arkham to figure out what strange is up to. Selina agrees to help in order to try to save her friend Bridgit, but only on the condition that she goes to Arkham alone and Bruce stays safe. While Selina is breaking into Arkham through the air vents she runs into Ed Nygma who, oddly enough, found an escape route through a vent that was put in the ceiling of his jail cell. Selina tells Nygma the way out of the jail while Nygma tells Selina the best way in. Finally believing that he has reached freedom, Ed comes out of the vent only to be caught by the police and put back into jail. While Ed is being recaptured, Selina gets caught in a room with her old friend Bridgit who has now been completely turned into Firefly and does not remember Selina at all.

Alfred and Bruce are warned by Gordon to watch out for Azrael, but he has already made his way into Wayne manor. Alfred attempts to fight Azrael, but to no avail as he is knocked out by the killer. Bruce attempts to run away from Azrael, but is caught. Gordon shows up just in time to try to save the day by shooting the villain, but Azrael is able to continue fighting even after being shot multiple times. As things are looking bleak for Gordon, Bruce, and Alfred, Penguin shows up and says that the group simply did not bring the correct tools for the job. At that moment, Butch shoots Azrael with a bazooka to avenge Tabitha.

Overall, I am honestly starting to get tired of the whole second half of this season being focused on dead bad guys coming back from the dead via Dr. Strange in order to try to get revenge. The preview for next week insinuates that Fish Mooney will also be coming back from the dead after also being revived by Strange. I get that Huge is a terrible guy that is trying everything in his capacity to get rid of the good guys, but as a criminal mastermind, I would assume he would have better plans than simply reviving old baddies over and over again. With only two episodes left in the season, and it looking like they are going to be more than likely focused on Fish Mooney and getting rid of Hugo Strange for good, I am hoping that Gotham can come up with something at least slightly original to try to keep me invested. I am getting more and more bored by the show week by week and rehashing the same thing every week has not helped pique my interest.

-Catch Fox’s Gotham on Mondays at 8/7c!
