Review – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “Closure”

This week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was an incredibly intense episode. There was a lot going on with Coulson and Rosalind, Fitz and Simmons, and Ward. It was a great way to lead into the winter finale.

Coulson and Rosalind finally are able to have a real date, but it ends with Rosalind’s death as Ward shoots her through a pane of glass from an impossible distance in order to get Coulson back for killing his love last season. Ward’s men come to Rosalind’s apartment to dispose of Coulson, as well, but Mack is able to show up in time to save Coulson from Ward’s cronies. Upon returning to HQ, Coulson gathers all of the original team members and discusses Ward with them to try to find his weakness. With some help from Daisy, Coulson is able to gather that Ward has a need to justify his actions as heroic in some way and shows that this is his weakness. Coulson decides to pull Bobbi and Hunter into a mission to take out Ward. Coulson uses Ward’s younger brother to trick Ward into being able to track his location to where Hydra currently is.

Meanwhile, Fitz and Simmons are able to figure out that Malick is the one behind Will’s project and go to the facility where the project took place to try and find clues as to how to get back to the other planet. Unfortunately for them, the facility is a trap and they are captured and brought directly to Malick and Ward. Malick has Simmons tortured in order to get her to reveal exactly how she figured out how to get back to Earth. Simmons refuses to give any information. Fitz, on the other hand, cannot stand hearing Simmons scream and agrees to go with Malick’s men, including Ward, to the other planet to try and bring back the death creature that we saw a few episodes back. While Ward and the others are going through the portal to the other world, Coulson jumps out of the plane above Hydra’s hideout and falls directly into the portal himself. He hits his head after landing but manages to escape notice from Ward and the men.

Mack, May, Daisy, Lincoln, and Joey, back at HQ, decide that following Bobbi, Hunter, and Coulson to the facility to provide support is the best course of action. They are unaware that Coulson has already thrown himself into the portal to the other world but I am sure they will find that out early in the next episode.

I think this episode did a great job of setting up the mid season finale. It left us with a cliffhanger, Coulson lying unconscious on the other world, and has the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. team gearing up for a fight with Hydra in the next episode. I want to see what happens between Coulson and Ward in the next episode and see how Fitz reacts if/when he gets to meet Will. Likewise, I hope to see the S.H.I.E.L.D. team try to fight Hydra without Coulson. It seems as though Coulson is always leading the charge into things like this so I would like to see how Mack does as a leader when Coulson is not around and see the Inhumans use their powers against those on the Hydra side.
