Review – Gotham “By Fire”

Hello everyone! Megan_Highwind here! This week’s episode of Gotham can be described as brutal. Besides the quickly rising power of Galavan, the rest of the characters had it pretty rough. I think an episode like this is necessary to bring some life back into the show. While I have not hated the show up to this point, I will admit that I am starting to get bored with a lot of the major storylines that are taking place this season.

Things between Galavan and Penguin keep heating up as Butch goes to Galavan and begs to be let into his group after Penguin cut off Butch’s hand. Galavan and his sister see through this ruse fairly quickly and are determined to break Butch of the hold that Penguin has put on him. By the end of the episode, it seems as though Butch is bringing Penguin into a trap Galavan has set up by telling Penguin that they can go and free his mother and that he escaped from Galavan’s mansion. Things between Ed Nygma and Ms. Kringle also heated up in this episode. Towards the end of the episode, Ed reveals to Ms. Kringle that he murdered her ex-lover and, to his surprise, she is not happy at all about this turn of events. Ed tries to talk some “sense” into Ms. Kringle and ends up choking Ms. Kringle in the process. I have to say that that is something that I was not expecting at all so it is nice to see that Ed is finally turning into the Riddler that we know and love to hate. He is starting to be able to not control his emotions and reactions and it has finally taken down the one person who was still keeping him somewhat sane.

This episode also brings back Bridgit as Firefly and brings Selina to the foreground of the episode. Selina helps Bridgit commit a robbery on some thugs and is caught in the act by a surveillance tape. Selina takes some of the money herself but tries to give some to Bridgit when her brothers come and kidnap her to take her back with them. Once Gordon sees the tape and sees Selina’s face on it, he goes to her house to try to convince her to let him take charge of finding Bridgit and saving her from being killed for the officer she murdered the week before. Selina reluctantly agrees and gives Jim the information to find Bridgit. When he goes to where the Pike family lives, he finds the brothers burned alive. Gordon eventually finds Bridgit,, with the help of Selina, and instead of choosing to let Jim help her, Bridgit chooses to try to burn everyone and ends up catching on fire herself. After the scene, Gordon tells Selina that Bridgit is dead. However, the episode ends with us getting a nice view into the Indian Hill monster area where people who have special abilities have been taken. Bridgit, it turns out, has been taken here as the suit that she was in stuck to her skin and make her fireproof.

Overall, this episode was a step up from the past few. After the untimely demise of Jerome, I was losing interest fast. I am still not as excited about this show as this season’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I am ready to see where Ed and Selina go from here. Likewise, the inclusion of the Indian Hill monster ranch has me curious as to what will happen next.
