Review – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “Purpose in the Machine”

This week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was not nearly as intense or content filled as the first episode, but it did do a good job of setting up a lot of plot points that I am sure will become major parts of the story-line as the season goes on. We finally found out what has been happening with some of the missing characters and are starting to get a good idea Hydra may once again become the powerhouse it was before.

To begin, we see a scene from a secret society a long time ago in which a member of the group is chosen and thrown into the Monolith never to be heard from again. Back to present day, Fitz is still trying hard to figure out how to bring Simmons back from inside the Monolith. Fitz, Coulson, and Bobbi go on a search for an Asguardian whom is still located on Earth, Professor Randolph, whom they believe can help them figure out some of the secrets behind the Monolith’s power. Meanwhile, Agent May is found to be hiding at her father’s house under the guise of him being too injured to take care of himself and Ward is working to try to gather more recruits to Hydra’s cause. The recruits include Alexander Von Strucker who happens to be the son of one of Hydra’s ex-leaders.

Professor Randolph ends up leading the agents to the castle in England that we saw in the beginning of the episode and from there they are able to find a secret passage that leads to an area that can hold the Monolith and keep the passage open for a short period before the machinery breaks. Daisy realizes that she can keep the portal opening by using her powers for a short period of time and Fitz makes the decision to go in after Simmons. While this is going on, Hunter has made his way to find Agent May and to try to convince her to go with him to try to take out Ward. While reluctant at first, May eventually decides to join his cause.

After Fitz jumps into the portal he is transmitted to the other world where in a last-ditch attempt he reaches Simmons and is able to pull her from the portal before it is completely destroyed. It is clear that Simmons has seen some pretty crazy things from inside the portal as she wakes in a nightmare, after being recovered, with a weapon of some sort in her hand. Meanwhile, Dr. Andrew Garner, May’s ex-fiance and the current psychologist for the agents, has a new student in his class who happens to be the one and only new recruit of Ward’s, Alexander Von Strucker.

Overall, this episode was pretty quiet, aside from the ending with Simmons, compared to last week. That being said, I can see that they are working hard to get plot-lines started and set up for future episodes. I enjoyed seeing what had happened to Agent May and getting to see a different side of her from what we normally see. Likewise, it was nice to see that Fitz was finally able to save Simmons and the crew will hopefully be back together again soon!
