Movie Time!

Hello everyone! Megan Highwind back from the tedium of work and the amazing experience of traveling to Berlin to bring you an article over something that is near and dear to my heart….movies! Going to the theater and seeing different movies is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time and this Spring/Summer movie season is winding up to be a great one so I thought I would bring you my thoughts on the five movies I am looking most forward to. While movies like Need for Speed, Veronica Mars, Divergent, Amazing Spiderman 2, Edge of Tomorrow, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Guardins of the Galaxy, among others, look like they will make this movie season an interesting one; the five movies I have chosen are sure to make this season one of the best(unless, of course, they fall flat in which case forget I mentioned them!)

The Wind Rises

The first movie that caught my interest is one that just recently got released into theaters. While it may not technically be in the Spring per say, I am excited enough for this movie that I am making an exception. The Wind Rises is Hayao Miyazaki’s swan song film and as a lover of all of his other movies I am making it a point to go see this one as soon as possible. I was big into anime in the 90s and somewhat lost interest in most anime once the mid 2000s were upon us. However, I have never seen a Miyazaki movie that I did not like and with good reason. Miyazaki’s movies, I think, transcend just being simply anime and delve into not only Japanese folklore, but social issues that are a part of everyday society. Taking social issues and presenting them in a way that is beyond the norm is something that I truly appreciate and find inspiring. That level of storytelling mixed with the amazing music, voice acting from actors like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt, and graphics provided in everyone of Miyazaki’s films makes his movies stand above any other movies in the genre. The Wind Rises being the last film from this great director makes me want to see it even more in theaters since it is the last new entry that we will see. The Wind Rises follows Jiro, who dreams of designing and flying airplanes, and his journey as he joins an engineering company which helps him rise to fame as an incredibly accomplished airplane designer. The film shows us Jiro’s life as he falls in love with a woman named Nahoko and deals with some of the major disasters in Japan such as the Great Earthquake and the Great Depression to Japan’s entry into the war. Miyazaki devotes, like he does so many of his other films, this adventure to having to deal with life and its complications as the world changes and the characters are thrown into new and life altering circumstances. The Wind Rises flew into theaters almost everywhere in March of 2013.

Captain America: The Winter Solider

Captain America: The Winter Solider staring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford is a title in the long running Marvel comic book hero theater takeover. Almost every movie that Marvel seems to release to the public is an instant success and  Winter Solider looks no different. I love Comic book films and always look forward to a new one and this Spring/ Summer is not going to disappoint. Captain America may not be my favorite hero of this particular bunch(I’m honestly always torn between Thor and Iron Man) I am still excited to see how The Cap is going to face dealing with current day society. In this particular entry to the series, Steve Rogers is forced with having to deal with living in the modern age and the problems that arise from jumping that many years into the future. After a S.H.I.E.L.D operative is hurt by an unknown force, the Captain, along with Black Widow and the Falcon, go after the new and powerful enemy named the Winter Solider. The Winter Solider is quite the character if you have read the comics or know any of Marvel’s folklore. He commits some sort of transgression against seemingly all of the heroes in the Avengers crew so seeing his story and how him, Captain America, and Black Widow interact is something I am looking forward to. Look for Captain America: The Winter Solider to muscle his way into theaters on April 4th 2014.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

As I stated above, I love comic book movies and Marvel movies so it is no surprise that another entry into my 5 most anticipated films of the season is another Marvel flick.  X-Men: Days of Future past stars Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence and Hugh Jackman, among others. I love the idea of putting the characters from the future with the characters from the past and having them work together to save the world, which is exactly what Marvel is doing with this film. As a sequel to the previous two X-Men films, Professor X and the rest of the crew are forced to make their past selves change things in order to save the entire species in the present day. This is not without its challenges, of course, as the events of the previous X-Men movies show that it is not always easy to get such a powerful group of individuals to work peacefully together to achieve a shared goal. However, even if working together is possible, the way in which the task will be completed can vary greatly depending on whether the other characters fall more in line with Professor X or Magneto’s way of thinking. I am excited to see exactly how the characters all work together and how X and Magneto can put their differences aside in order to protect things that they both cherish. It will also be interesting to see how differently the actors portraying both the young and older characters make them distinct for the time period they are a part of yet similar as they are both the same person. X-Men: Days of Future Past will appear in theaters on May 23rd 2014.

One of the movies that I am really looking forward to that has not gotten too much hype as of yet is Disney’s Maleficent. The first time I saw the trailer for this movie I was immediately blown away by how different and amazing the CGI looks in the film. The powers that Maleficent displays just in the short trailer makes me want to see more and know more of what can of powers this newer version of the villan has been given. I am also a huge Disney fan and loved the original Sleeping Beauty so this is a must see for me. We never really got too much of an insight into how Maleficent got so wicked so seeing the events that made her so heartless and caused her to curse Princess Aurora will be something to see. The film stars Angelina Jolie as the wicked Maleficent and from the short trailer above, she looks like she will be a great choice for the villian. She sounds devious and looks beautiful yet terrifying at the same time. It will also be intriguing to me to see if they delve into how Maleficent received that huge amount of power that she has or in what way she has shaped her powers into being so strongly evil. Maleficent will cast her way into theaters May 20th 2014.

The last movie on my list does not have much more that can be said about it that my colleage Joshua Evo has not already said with 100 times more hype than I can ever possibly fathom for one movie. However, this does not mean that Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla is not near the top of my list of films for the season. Starring Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Sally Hawkins, 2014’s Godzilla film focuses on how mankind accidentally awakens a massive beast from the depths. This creature with its sheer size and power leaves seemingly nothing but destruction in his wake; while people are left dealing with trying to figure out to keep such a foe from destroying the world. Tweaking Godzilla’s design, roar, and some other aspects of them film have sparked debate from longtime fans, but from the trailer alone I am thrilled with how great it looks like it will be. Godzilla has always been known as one of(if you ask Joshua Evo the greatest) the greatest mamoth monsters to ever grace the silver screen and I cannot wait to see how much destruction and chaos will be caused by the revival of such an awesome beast. Explosions always follow Godzilla whevever he goes and as a lover of all things that go boom I cannot wait to see what kind of crazyness this revival will ensue. Godzilla is stomping and roaring his way into theaters on May 16th 2014.

Those my choices for my most anticipated movies of the Spring/Summer movie season and I would love to hear what all of yours are! Do you agree with my selections or are there some movies that you think will be better than those chosen above?  Please let me know in the comments below and as always read, review, and share(oh and vote in the poll!)
