What’s good, everyone? Hopefully, everything. Joshua Evo here, live from being on vacation with family to wish everyone a Happy Holidays! As you might expect, we’re going to go a bit quiet, as we’re pretty spread out from one another and are spending time from families… and possibly playing more awesome games. Not saying which. Could be both, who knows? At any rate, enjoy your time off, Happy Holidays and we’ll see you all in 2013!

The Sweet Runback – 2012 Retrospective

What’s good, everyone? Joshua Evo here, with the rest of the DRE crew in tow to thank all of you for the support we received this year and to dole out thanks and shout outs where they’re most definitely deserved. Back in February of 2011, James B. Boss and I had reached such levels of hype over the upcoming releases of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Pokemon Black/White that we started writing little personal reviews on our respective Facebook pages when the games were released. After some prodding from friends and family to “do that stuff more professionally”, we started the original Disk Read Error back on Blogspot. Fast forward to now, 110+ posts later, a major move to WordPress and we’re still here and still writing. 2012 has been an explosive year for us here at DRE and I wanted to thank all of our followers, readers and contributors for all the fun we’ve had this year. So, guess what? Shout outs incoming!

First shout outs go out to my all of fellow gaming bloggers but especially LadyCroft3, cary and Brit of Linksaveszelda, Recollections of Play and BlondeNerd.com, respectively. It was a pleasure reading your blogs and working with you on various projects for DRE and I definitely look forward to working with you guys again. Extra thanks to LadyCroft3 for her work on our awesome banner as well as all the great feedback she offers and help she’s given during the year. You are an amazing lady (pun totally intended) and fantastic blogger and I wish you nothing but success in the future. Next up is the crew at thumbACTIVE for their support and seeing fit to grant us affiliate status with their site. Thanks also to the crew at The Nerdy Directive for having me as a guest on their podcast and allowing me to sit, ramble and nerd it up. I’m looking forward to doing some reviews for you guys in the future. I also have very special thanks to Konami for allowing us to be a part of Konami Gamers Night event this year and giving us a taste of that gaming media life. You guys make some of the world’s best games and here’s to hoping that we can maybe work with Konami in a more official capacity in the future? *wink wink*. My biggest thanks though go to our friends and family members who read our rantings (whether they agree, disagree or even know what we’re talking about or not) and to ANYONE who’s ever stopped by, read an article, retweeted, shared, followed, plugged or somehow supported Disk Read Error. It’s been a hell of a first year and we look forward to making 2013 even better. Thank you very much.

– Evo out.

Hey everybody, James B. Boss here to thank you all for your support. This year has been really awesome for us here with all of the huge releases and gaming news and it was our pleasure to bring it to you. With this year coming to a close and the new year just around the corner, I would like to thank you all for all the support you have given us. I personally know I haven’t been the most active member of the staff but I hope to fix that in the year to come.

– James B. Boss

Hi everyone! Megan Highwind here to thank you all for taking the time to read our blog! I appreciate all of the likes, comments, and shares that you all have been giving our site. The next year looks to be a promising one and I hope you all are as excited about the games and the new adventures to come in the next year as I am. Thanks again for sticking with us and supporting us for the past year. See you in 2013! (If the world doesn’t end of course, dun dun dun!!!!!!)

–Megan Highwind has left the party.

Hello everyone. Jessica V. here to take a look back at the crazy year that we just had. When this year started I had no idea I would be working on a blog and when I did sign on, I thought I would be doing mostly backend, behind the scenes type things. Boy, did that change. Here we are a year later and the little blog that could is still gaining momentum. We owe that all to you, our readers. So personally, I would like to thank each and everyone of you that have taken the time to read, comment or even think about our articles. At Disk Read Error, we are just a bunch of crazies with opinions and a public forum (scary combination, right?). Seriously though, thank you all for reading and being a part of this. See you all in 2013. I tip my hat to you all.

Geniuses at… well, it’s not exactly “work”…

What’s good, readers?

As you may (or may not have noticed, depending on who is actually reading this) the DRE crew has largely been absent for a pretty long time. I wish I could say that it was because we were refining what we do here, working out sponsorship and partnership deals, procuring funding so that we’re able to serve up all of the same great content you all know and love(?) but that’d make me a pretty crappy liar since in reality, things just come up that demand our attention with a somewhat increased urgency. We swear, there’s no ulterior motive or sinister explanation to give other than that.

Pictured: “Increased urgency”

In reality, school and new jobs have started up for some of us and it’s a little tough to keep the pace while having little to no money. The game review gig doesn’t pay all that well at the beginning, kids, and we’re constantly trying to find LEGAL ways to circumvent the whole “having to pay for our own review materials” most of the time so as such, reviews have tapered off a bit.  In non-virtual land, Jessica and I are gearing up for a pretty significant summer trip to a place many of you in Nerd Kingdom have heard of and a lot of our fundage is directed in that, um, direction. While it’s primarily intended as a vacation of sorts, we DO plan to keep our ears and eyes open for news and other assorted bits of coverage to take in and then to report on to the blog for all to consume.  So fret not, dear readers, you guys are great but we just needed to spend some time apart. It’s nothing either of us did and if anything, it could be good for us in the long run. We always said that if it was meant to be, we’d see each other again, right?

Okay, enough with the break up melodrama.

As far as gaming goes, we’ve been going pretty light but as you all know, there HAVE been some significant announcements and amounts of drama in most of the gaming communities. Oh, Diablo III Release Date, FGC Sexual Harassment and Mass Effect 3 ending… where WOULD our lives be without you? At any rate, we WILL be back with new content very soon, starting with my review next week of a quirky little PSN game with an epic title that is ALL the rage right now. So from all of us here… thanks again and pardon our dust! :-)

Jessica Valentine and The Temple of Unfinished Games.

Good day boys and girls, gather near for I have a tale you may like to hear. Okay enough of the prose, it’s tiring. Now onward! I used to be a perfectionist. A completionist, even. Yet, recently it has come to my attention that times have changed. Sitting down one dark and stormy evening, I gazed upon the heaps and piles of games I own. Some were bought on a whim after hearing good things, others obtained after months of pining. Most, if not all of these treasures uncompleted or hell, never even opened. I don’t think there is anything wrong with having a few (and by few I mean many) games to fall back on for a rainy day, right? I mean I enjoy playing games, so why oh why do I never seem to finish them?

When I was younger, I would complete almost every single game I could get my hands on to 100% and in those days, it usually involved cheat codes and game secrets that were unlocked after hours of blood, sweat and tears.  Completing a game to 100% was an accomplishment, something for one to take pride in that you had bested the game in every way possible. Where has that mentality gone? Personally, I believe the problem is in the games themselves. The rewards for finding 400 hidden relics or 1,000,000 whatcha-ma-callits are just not worth the time. Could the trophy/achievement system to be to blame? Or it is that tedious daunting tasks are the new mini game? Maybe I am just too old for this $%!^.

Do I really have to say it?

The last game I finished just the story for was Batman: Arkham City. Sorry to say boys and girls but I was disappointed. The main story was too short, it also felt lacking in any real complexity.  The side quests (to me) were not exactly what I call fun either. Running all the way across the map to find a ringing phone? Ugh… can’t someone else get it? Searching for the Riddler trophies also got tedious; especially since you couldn’t easily switch back and forth between Catwoman and Batman.  All in all, because I felt there was no joy to be found in the side quests I turned to the story to engage me, and it just didn’t fill the void in my yearning heart.

The thought has crossed my mind that may be expecting too much, I might just be easily distracted, or maybe I just want more actual content for my money. Who knows? I can’t even bring myself to 100% Lego games anymore. I love Lego games (I see you laughing) but seriously, with my backlog being what it is one would think I would set aside some time trouble and effort to chop down what seems to be an ever growing list.

You said you’d complete me…

But alas, there are other more sinister options; I could sell my unfinished/un-started games. However, I love my games. I treasure them, all still in their original cases collecting dust in front of my console. For some reason I can’t bring myself to sell a game that I have not completed for fear that once it leaves my possession I will feel the urge to play it again.  I suppose getting a GameFly account might work out more in my favor.

So tell me boys and girls do you keep the games you put on the back burner? Do you sell them? Or do you watch as you hopelessly fall further and further behind as more and more games you want to play come out and pile on top of your slowly crushed soul?

Jessica OUT!

Press Start to Play

Hello all!

My name is Joshua Evo and my fellow writers and I are here to tell our account of a story that’s been told for ages now:

Boy and friends meet Game.

Boy and friends play Game.

Boy and friends like or hate Game.

Boy and friends review, write or publicly muse about Game for all to see.

Boy and friends lather, rinse and repeat.

I’m sure you all will come to meet the other members of the contributing team as time passes. We’re planning to to our best to update as often as possible but as is the case with all things, life or other obligations sometimes get in the way but rest assured that our eyes and ears are always open to soak in as much information as we can for the purposes of providing content to the best of our ability. Maybe.

With that said:

Welcome to Disk Read Error :)
